Indigenous studies

At Wattle Glen PS, we firmly believe in providing an inclusive education for all our students. As part of our commitment to fostering cultural diversity, promoting reconciliation, and enriching our students' understanding of Australia's heritage, we are dedicated to integrating Australian Indigenous culture into our school's curriculum.

Why Embrace Indigenous Culture?

The inclusion of Indigenous perspectives, traditions, and histories in our classrooms is an enriching experience for our students. By incorporating Indigenous knowledge and customs, we aim to create a learning environment that respects and celebrates the unique contributions of Australia's First Nations people.

Environmental and Cultural Sustainability: Our students learn from Indigenous knowledge of the land and environment, providing valuable insights into sustainability and ecological responsibility. We encourage students to embrace Indigenous insight to cultivate a sense of environmental consciousness through many different learning opportunities.

Promoting Respect and Reconciliation: By embracing Australian Indigenous culture, we aim to instil empathy and respect among our students. Our discussions encourage open dialogues, promoting reconciliation and social cohesion.

Join Us in Celebrating Diversity: We believe that cultural diversity enriches our school community and the nation as a whole. By embracing Australian Indigenous culture, we hope to nurture globally aware citizens who appreciate their own cultural identities while valuing and respecting the unique contributions of all cultural groups."

How do we embed Indigenous Australian history and cultural education?

Cultural Awareness: Our curriculum strives to instil cultural awareness and appreciation among our students. We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which our school stands, and we incorporate Indigenous stories, artworks, music, and language across various subjects to provide authentic connections to Indigenous cultures.

Community Involvement: We actively involve local Indigenous elders and community members as guest speakers and educators. Their presence allows students to learn firsthand from the custodians of the culture, deepening their understanding of Indigenous perspectives.

Exploring History: Our educational approach involves exploring Indigenous history, addressing topics such as the Stolen Generation, the impact of colonisation, and contemporary issues faced by Indigenous communities. Through this, we aim to challenge misconceptions and foster a more accurate understanding of Australia's past.
